Roald Dahl developed this story till the very last sentence. He has you read through a nail biter only to finally figure out what happens the very last line. Genius. He made the characters real by developing their whole being very realistic. The characterization in this short story is impeccable. While you can see the story slowly dwindle to the end and you know something is going to be wrong with the baby and the father Roald Dahl keeps you honest, and on your toes, he doesn't totally tell you how it's going to end with horrible foreshadowing.
