The Umbrella Man

This short story told a story about a slick, swindling, smooth talking man. My biggest question is, why do neither the daughter or mother try to stop this thief. He uses the innocence of the elderly and the good heart of people against them. Not only does he steals other people's umbrellas he will sell it on the street before they even notice it's missing. The story ends by them witnessing his whole scheme and set up unfold in front of them and they did not do a single thing. As a person you owe to it everybody to stop such a black-hearted scheme and not let him go and steal the next persons umbrella for a treble whiskey. I do not believe they should of just let him go without confrontation.
